A hybrid work built around a bot: a program that repeats tasks on the internet by itself. It started from open data on the more than 37,000 people then registered as disappeared in Mexico, and asked whether a machine could reach into the social fabric and put pressure on the state through information.
The bot chose a name at random from the database and searched the web for photographs of faces linked to that name. From them it built a new, ghostly face, a body dissolving into anonymity, into the mass of information and into others. It posted the face with the person's name, the date of the disappearance and a short text written for the project by collaborating writers. It also looked for Twitter profiles with the same name and sent the same information to an email list it generated at random.
In the exhibition space, a thermal printer gave the data a physical body, printing a record every 90 minutes: the interval in which, at the time, a person disappeared in Mexico.
Santos conceived the piece as an anti-monument for the internet: a constant reminder of the disappearances, meant to keep the crisis visible and uncomfortable for those responsible for acting on it.
